Rice

Rice is one of the world’s most important staple crops, feeding over half of the global population and shaping cultures, economies, and ecosystems for more than 10,000 years. Botanically belonging to the genus Oryza, rice is primarily cultivated as Oryza sativa (Asia) and Oryza glaberrima (Africa), with thousands of varieties adapted to environments ranging from flooded paddies to dry uplands. Its unique ability to grow in standing water suppresses weeds and boosts yields, but also links rice farming to significant methane emissions, making it a key focus in climate-smart agriculture.

Nutritionally, rice is a major source of carbohydrates and energy; while white rice is milled to improve shelf life and texture, this process removes fiber and micronutrients that are retained in brown and pigmented rice varieties. Beyond food, rice influences social structures (labor-intensive planting and harvesting), religious rituals, and global trade, making it not just a crop, but a foundation of human civilization and food security.
